UK- The world's second largest cinema operator Cineworld to Close

The world's second largest cinema operator, and the largest in the UK with 120 sites, Cineworld to shut temporarily its UK cinemas in the coming weeks.

It is also closing all its 536 Regal cinemas in the US. Cineworld employed 37,000 people globally before the pandemic, with 5,500 in the UK.

It follows the announcement that upcoming Bond film No Time To Die has been pushed back to April 2012, after it was set to be released in cinemas next month.

The premiere of the 007 film No Time To Die has been postponed twice .

The company has written to Boris Johnson and the culture secretary, Oliver Dowden, this weekend to warn them that the industry has become “unviable".

The firm says it has been hit by delays in the release of big-budget films, putting 5,500 jobs at risk.

The head of the UK Cinema Association said he feared the Cineworld closure was "indicative of challenges faced by the entire UK cinema industry at the moment".

Phil Clapp said: "Although cinemas opened in July and have been able to deliver a safe and enjoyable experience, without major new titles then we understand we aren't able to get as many people out of the home as we'd like."
