South African Conversationalist West Mathewson Killed by White Lions

A South African conservationist has died after he was mauled by two white lions.

West Mathewson, 68, was attacked by two mature lionesses, named Tanner and Demi, after he unlocked their gate to take them for a morning walk.

His wife Gill, attempted to rescue her husband by distracting the 400lb lionnesses but they had already inflicted fatal injuries.

He ran a popular safari lodge, Lion Tree Top Lodge, in the Limpopo province.

The lionesses have since been moved to another game lodge and are expected to be released into the wild later.

The lionesses were tranquilized following the attack on Wednesday and have been taken to a local endangered species centre.

According to Ms Fergusson, they will later be released into the wild.
