Scotland Reports First New Deaths following the New Positive Tests Since July 16

Two people have died of coronavirus in Scotland in the last 24 hours, Nicola Sturgeon has confirmed.

"I think all of us have become used to hearing news of no deaths under these daily figures," Ms Sturgeon said.

"These two new deaths today are of course devastating for those who will be grieving the loss. But they should also be a reminder for all of us that the threat of Covid hasn't yet gone away".

The new deaths reported  following a positive test for Covid-19 for the first time since 16 July by making a grand total of deaths with the new figures equal to 2,494.It was announced that 67 new cases were identified across the country in the same period.

249 people are currently being treated in hospital with two in intensive care.

The latest figures come after it was revealed a pupil at Lasswade High School in Bonnyrigg had tested positive for the deadly virus.

The Scottish Government has announced face masks will be made mandatory in school communal areas from Monday, August 31.
