Joe Biden Picks Kamala Harris as His Vice Presidential Running Mate

Joe Biden has named California senator Kamala Harris as his vice presidential running mate.

Biden announced the decision in an email to supporters.

"I know a thing or two about being Vice President. More than anything, I know it can’t be a political decision. It has to be a governing decision. If the people of this nation entrust me and Kamala with the office of President and Vice President for the next four years, we’re going to inherit a nation in crisis, a nation divided, and a world in disarray. We won’t have a minute to waste. That’s what led me to Kamala Harris," Biden said in the email.

Harris, a barrier-breaking former prosecutor, is the daughter of immigrants from Jamaica and India, and is the first Black woman and the first Asian American to run on a major party ticket.

“I have the great honor to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris — a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants — as my running mate,” Biden announced on Twitter.

After four years at Howard, Ms Harris went on to earn her law degree at the University of California, Hastings, and began her career in the Alameda County District Attorney's Office.

Biden’s decision followed a months-long search for a candidate who could lift the Democratic ticket in a wild and unpredictable election year taking place against the backdrop of a global coronavirus pandemic.

She is the first black woman to serve in the role.
