Fire at Covid Facility in Vijayawada India Kills At least 10; More than 20 Injured


The fire broke out at a hotel being used as a temporary Covid hospital, Sunday's fire started shortly after 05:00 (23:30GMT).
At least 10 patients have died after a fire at a temporary Covid hospital in Vijayawada, south-east India.The fire broke out at Swarna Palace, a hotel being used to house patients, on Sunday morning.
It was brought under control in half an hour and all surviving patients have been moved to another hospital in the city, officials said.
More than 20 people were injured. They have been taken to a hospital elsewhere in the city.The cause of the fire is not yet known. An investigation has been launched.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he was "anguished" by the blaze, the second fire at a Covid centre in days.

According to the Vijayawada city police commissioner B Srinivasulu, the fire first broke out on the ground floor near the reception area and rapidly spread to the first floor. Images captured by the bystanders also showed huge fire at the reception area.

Srinivasulu said that they have rescued about 30 people and the fire was brought under control within 25 minutes. He said the control room received an SOS at around 5:15am. The fire and quick response teams rushed to the spot and started the rescue operation, he said. The patients were brought out using ladders as the stair cases were engulfed in fire and there was no external fire exit in the building.
