Consumption of antioxidant foods, supplements and a proper amount of water are the main precautions that you can  ensure a good functioning kidneys.

Another measures are 

Control your blood pressure by doing physical activities and making a hear-healthy diet.
Control blood sugar and cholesterol levels, take medications if you needed.
Abstain from eating a lot of salt or Potassium.
