Apple announced today that it will officially power future Macs by transition to its world class custom silicon to deliver Industry leading performance and powerful new technologies.Tim Cook, the Chief Executive Officer of Apple announced today that the first Mac with Apple Silicon will ship to Consumers by the end of this year.

Basically, Apple Silicon is an in house chip akin to what is the powering iPhone and iPad family of devices.

This transition will also establish a common architecture across all the Apple products, making it easier for the developers to write and optimise their apps for the entire eco system.

Cook detailed that it will be a two year transition process, with the first Apple Silicon powered Mac shipping to customers by the end of the year.

Developers can now get started updating their apps to take advantage of the advanced capabilities of Apple Silicon in the Mac.

Apple also introduced macOS Big Sur, the next major release of macOS, which delivers its biggest update in more than a decade.
